Fulya Asyalı
Biography
She graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Sculpture in 2004. She completed her master's degree in 2008 and her Ph.D. in 2016. She still works as associate professor at the same institution. In addition to holding solo exhibitions, Fulya Asyalı has participated in national and international exhibitions.
Asyalı's art is known for its surrealist approach to figurative sculptures. In her sculptures, she combines small remnants of the city and parts of the human body to create metamorphic objects that express her melancholic feelings.
In her sculptures, where she uses contrasting concepts such as living/non-living, new/old, past/future, and inner/outer, she enables us to question the bipolar structure of existence. She strengthens her inquiries through dualities by bringing together the contradictory with the material she uses.
Her way of bringing together fragments of the familiar is both a confrontation with the alienation we experience and a call to look at the known differently. Her sculptures invite the viewer to “Look Awry,” as Zizek puts it. Because changing one's gaze actually means the re-clarification of our minds, which have been polluted for a long time.
